Week 2: Children are the best role models

This post is part of a series for my sister’s birthday month to ignite inspiration, joy and connection. Week 1 is about starting the month with a “clean” mind and energised spirit. Week 2 is about finding your inner child. Week 3 is about self-love.  Week 4 is about vulnerable acceptance and week 5 is about appreciating the gift of being alive.

This was taken in the backyard of my grandmother’s house in North Vancouver.

It was yet another rainy day and my cousin, my sister and I were having the time of our lives literally singing in the rain. I’m the one in the purple raincoat on the right, you can see the strain in my face as I tried to hit a high note to whatever song we were singing.

This picture perfectly captures the playful innocence of a child’s spirit. I just loved these days in Vancouver, it felt so warm and loving and carefree. All of us were together, under the same roof, playing with our dolls, painting, making “music” and eating delicious meals prepared by my grandma.

This week is all about taking chances, being present and enjoying the journey of life. Children are the best teachers for this.

Here’s to singing in the rain!

Monday, May 7:
“Don’t be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

It’s so important to just let life be, let life happen. I love how it’s worded as an experiment, it takes the seriousness out of it. Go out and live your life, experience as much as you can.

Tuesday, May 8:
“Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory.”

A few weeks ago I watched Jim and Andy on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it I recommend you do. Jim Carrey talks about all sorts of mind blowing things like free will is an illusion, why we crave approval, consciousness and all sorts of other interesting things. This quote really made me realise how often I warp myself so that others will accept me and actually made me so happy to be me! It inspired me to write a self-reflective piece about my own need for approval. If this quote isn’t enough to make you excited about being your awesome, lovable self then try this TedTalk about the “Art of Being Yourself” – it’s amazing and poetic. Seriously watch it right now!

Wednesday, May 9:
“Remember, life is a journey. If you got everything you wanted all at once there’d be no point to living. Enjoy the ride, in the end you’ll see these “setbacks” as giant leaps forward, only you couldn’t see the bigger picture in the moment. Remain calm, all is within reach; all you have to do is show up every day, stay true to your path and you will surely find the treasure you seek.”

*deep breath* I am not the most patient person, but I am trying to be. I am trying to live in each moment and do exactly as this says; understand and accept that I’m taking all the necessary steps I can. There is no fast-forward button to success. Nor would I want one. Life is the journey, why do I keep forgetting this?!

Thursday, May 10:
“Life consists entirely of the present moment.”

If you actually stop to think about it, we don’t need to live in pain or suffering if we can learn to pull our strong and stubborn mind back into the current moment. How amazing is that? The only challenge is getting that mind to cooperate. Which, to me, feels like training a disobedient puppy.

Friday, May 11:
“Overthinking is an addiction.”

Guilty as charged. I am very prone to overthinking. It turns out you can literally be addicted to a negative and unhelpful thought pattern that hooks onto to you and doesn’t let you go. Eventually, over time, you begin to believe this thought pattern. Watch this video of the expert himself, Eckart Tolle. He’s so relaxed it looks like he could fall asleep at any moment.

Saturday, May 12:
“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.”

Always find softness in your heart, even after all the darkness it’s been through. Your heart is stronger than any other muscle. Watch it rise above the pain and be kind to others and yourself, always.

Sunday, May 13:
“You shouldn’t try to stop everything from happening. Sometimes you’re supposed to feel awkward. Sometimes you’re supposed to be vulnerable in front of people. Sometimes it’s necessary because it’s all part of you getting to the next part of yourself.”

I just love this. It feels like a warm, loving, forgiving parent. It allows me to see that these awkward and sometimes difficult times in my life are all just part of being a human being. Embrace it!
