The Miracle question is an interesting technique used in Solution Focused Therapy that helps a therapist guide the sessions for a client. It’s also something useful to try out with yourself.
Imagine this:
While you are sleeping tonight a miracle happens, the problem you have been struggling with for months or years magically disappears.
You rise in the morning, groggy and confused, slowly discovering that the issue you have been facing is gone. Poof.
Now, ask yourself the following:
- What would be the first thing you noticed that would tell you that things have changed?
- What would you be doing?
- How would this new change affect your life?
- What will others notice?
- What else would be different?
- How would you feel?
- What would things look like?
- What else other things would you notice?
Keep going with these questions until you have a really clear idea of the positive changes the ʻmiracleʼ would bring about for you. The more clear and informed the image you create, the easier it becomes to move towards it.
The idea behind this question is to help you imagine an ideal future and connects it to the present. By answering these questions, you are challenged to look past your obstacles and feelings of hopelessness and instead focus on the possibilities and opportunities. This then helps you to form a more detailed action plan to get you where you want to go.
A great tip, thank you for sharing.
