The crow at the creek

When we were kids we lived in Ottawa for 5 years. Our house was located conveniently close to an open field with lakes and a forest.

My sister and I wound up spending hours exploring “the creek” as we called it, discovering things and playing games. I remember after watching ‘Fly Away Home‘ we both excitedly returned home with goose eggs we’d found in a nest. We would have them sleep in our dresser drawers just like in the movie. My mum saw us trying to sneak past her and politely asked us “how do you plan on taking of them? I think you should put them back where you found them.” We were both shocked and disappointed.

One day after school the whole family went for a walk to the creek and we found a crow that was all caught up in wire. We ran back to the house to get gloves and scissors to set him free. I remember the moment vividly and I feel like these photos capture the warmth of the summer so well. Me wearing my favorite dolphin t-shirt and my sisters look of “can I hold him now?”

She set him free.
