Exploring the Shadow

A series of 4 workshops creatively exploring the psychological shadow, designed to bring self-awareness, acceptance, understanding and integration.

Exploring the Shadow

How can I be substantial if I do not cast a shadow? I must have a dark side also If I am to be whole.

Carl Jung

What to expect

These beginner workshops are designed for people who are interested in dipping their toes in shadow work in a safe and welcoming group environment. In a group environment we can learn so much from each other. One persons understanding of their own shadow can help accelerate your own understanding.

The path of embracing the shadow is not a path of “darkness,” but instead it’s one of unfolding light. Understanding and bringing awareness to the parts of ourselves we dislike and often unconsciously disown can be deeply rewarding, healing and even transformational.

You can think of these workshops as a creative journey within. Each workshop involves a guided meditation, journaling, art-making and group sharing.

Note: shadow work is a process, not a destination. It’s one that requires patience, courage, and compassion.

What is the Shadow?

The shadow is our emotional blind spot. In analytical psychology, the shadow is an unconscious aspect of the personality that does not correspond with the ego ideal, leading the ego to resist and project the shadow. It’s also known as the “dark side” of our personality because it consists of the parts of ourselves we often neglect and abandon. The shadow often consists of primitive, ‘negative’ human emotions and impulses like rage, envy, greed, selfishness, desire, and the striving for power.

The shadow is the part ourselves that we disown. However these disowned aspects of ourselves don’t disappear. While we might try to deny their existence, we can’t get rid of them. They remain in the shadow of our awareness, or our unconscious. That is until we shine a light on them and understand them.

We can’t eliminate the shadow, but we can learn to understand it.
