Week 1 – The virtual advent calendar

On the 14th of this month, my sister would have turned 31 years old.

As a way to celebrate Elizabeth’s birthday, I have compiled a list of my favourite, heartwarming quotes to light up your heart every single day of May.

Instead of making one gigantic post, I split them by week. Every Monday morning I’ll publish that week’s dose of inspiration.

You can think of it as a virtual advent calendar. Except, instead of chocolate, it’s pure 100% organic words that empower, enlighten and brighten your day.

Happy first day of May! ♥

Tuesday, May 1:
“Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience.”

Get out there and take some chances, do something you’ve never done before, leave your comfort zone. Create memories that will turn into stories you’ll tell your grandchildren.

Wednesday, May 2:
“There’s no WiFi in the forest, but I promise you’ll find a better connection.”

I love this because it reminds me of the incredible power nature has over us. Our world is far too overstimulated in digital media. I am so often dragged into the vortex of social media and can visibly notice it’s harmful effects. I’ve started following positive role models who express vulnerabilities and talk openly about the human condition and unfollowed people who perpetuate the myth of perfection (here are some healthy Instagram accounts to follow: @recipesforselflove, @bymariandrew, @bethdrawsthings@nayyirah.waheed@onbeing, @makedaisychains…)

Whenever I find myself surrounded by nature, I feel at ease. I love the smell of the woods, the sounds of the kookaburra and the way humans seem to gravitate towards a fire hypnotised by it’s flames. It’s so soothing for the soul, humans were designed for that kind of environment. Every time I come home after a weekend away in nature, I feel so refreshed and clear headed.

Let’s not be like this:

Thursday, May 3:
“Begin to see yourself as a soul with a body rather than a body with a soul.”

Don’t get lost in the superficialness of your ‘shell’ – you are more than your physical self. You are your thoughts, your spirit and your energy. Make yourself more attractive by being a better human being.

There can never too much compassion, forgiveness, love and encouragement. These are the very things that humans need to flourish. Cultivate more of this and watch them grow!

Friday, May 4:
“Nobody cares about what you didn’t do.”

The other day while I was getting ready for work, I left youtube playing and “Wheat Kings” by the Tragically Hip came on. This particular lyric really hit me. It actually made me sign up for a writing class immediately after I heard it. It’s just so true, no one cares about all these cool things you were going to do but forgot/got distracted/lost track of time. It’s not interesting. Even for yourself, the things you will regret the most are the things you didn’t do – go back up and re-read quote #1: take the leap and dive in!

Saturday, May 5:
“Just look at life with more playful eyes. Don’t be so serious, seriousness becomes like a blindness. The whole world is showering its joy on you in so many ways, but you are too serious, you cannot open your heart.”

I love the beauty of the sentence, “the whole world is showering its joy on you in so many ways” – how wonderfully true. There is much beauty in the world, it is everywhere. If only we could get outside of our heads and be here now to savour it.

Sunday, May 6:
“Nothing in the world can bother you as much as your own mind. Others may seem to be bothering you, but it is not others, it is your own mind.”

This is such a powerful realisation: no one else can make you feel guilty or shameful or bad about yourself – only you can allow that. You can stand at the gates of your mind and monitor the thoughts that seep through. What will you will you allow to pass? There is much power in knowing and understanding that we can be in control.
